シラーズはイランの南側に位置し、ファールス州の北西にある町だ。シラーズには4000年以上にわたる長い歴史がある。中学時代にペルセポリスの本を読んで以来、とても興味を持っていたし、一度は訪れたいと思っていた。この宗教上の首都はアケメネス朝時代(550–330 BC)に栄華を誇っていた。既に廃墟と化して入るものの、目を瞑ると当時の賑わいの情景が浮かんだ。

イランに来る前から、「シラーズ」という土地の名前を良く知っていた。きっとそれはワインのせいだろう。赤ワインに適した世界でも有名な濃赤色な葡萄は、この町シラーズと関係を持っているといわれている。ワインの起源とでもいえるような遺跡から発掘されているし、古代ペルシア人こそが人類史上初めてワインを醸造したと考えられている。

そして、シラーグレープのルーツはこの土地にあり、フランスのコート・デュ・ローヌ地方に持ち込まれたとされている。 長く続いた輝かしい歴史を背景にシラーズはイラン文化の中心地となった。残念ながらすべての歴史が喜ばしいものではなく、ポグロム（ユダヤ人虐殺）事件はこのきらびやかな歴史に影を落とした。ただ、総合的に行ってシラーズは観光には最適な場所だし、観光客を笑顔とお得意のおもてなしで迎えてくれるのである。有名な詩や美しい庭園、美味しいワインや色鮮やかな花々、そしてかわいらしく鳥たちは私を魅了し、この土地での時間はあっという間に過ぎ去った。

もう一度訪れたい土地のひとつであることに間違いはない。

Shiraz is located in the south of Iran and the northwest of Fars Province. Shiraz has a long history; more than 4,000 years old. When I was a junior high school student, I read about the ruin of Persepolis (Takht-e-Jamshid) . This ceremonial capital was at the height of its prosperity during Achaemenid Empire era(ca. 550–330 BC). I could enjoy this ruin under the sunny skies.

Before coming to Iran I’ve already known its name ‘Shiraz’ due to the wine. This world famous dark-skinned grape is said to have some relation with this city. The oldest sample of wine in the world is discovered here, and ancient Persia is considered the first wine-making civilization. In addition, it is said that Syrah grape had its root here and was brought to Rhône, France.

Long and flourished history made Shiraz the center for Iranian culture. Not all history was happy:
the a tragic event about the pogrom casted a shadow. But totally Shiraz is a good place for tourists. Local people usually greeted me with a big smile. Poems, beautiful gardens, tasty wine, brilliant flowers and lovely birds fascinate me. And the time flew by.
